Master Key

At first viewing, Key Men may come across as humorous, quirky, flippant or even clever. However, the works may also carry a deeper meaning.

These paintings has a very different energy from a conventional portrait. The figure is formally dressed and monumental, yet the absence of a human head immediately removes him from ordinary reality. In its place, the key becomes both a face and an identity. That transformation is simple, strange and memorable.

The Key Man wants to be seen, but he does not want to reveal himself entirely. So, on a human level, Key Man is symbolic of the masks we wear, the devices we use to hide ourselves even as we reveal ourselves to the world and to the judgement of others.


In this context, Key Man may well be a unique self-portrait by a very talented artist.
